![]() The central scheme of Jotun is the beautifully animated Jotun themselves, challenging boss battles that test patience and challenge players in a variety of ways. But we’ll talk about Jotun’s artistic merits more in a moment. Instead these encounters were microscopic in comparison to the six titans I faced across the game’s narrative, yet somehow the whole thing retains a sense of serenity and beauty - a wondrous creation of the Norse afterlife, helped along by the striking visuals and haunting soundtrack. Each area held so much gameplay potential and initially I saw Jotun playing out more like Transistor, with smaller encounters leading up to the final challenges. It’s not to say that these sections aren’t beautifully designed or that I didn’t enjoy the little surprises each one offered, but too often it felt like there was just too little to do, and no real reason to use skills or abilities outside of the arenas where you stick an axe in each Jotun. All of the regions are very distinct and offer wildly different visual presentations meshed with only slightly different mechanics for making it through each one.īy the end, the trek through each region began to drag on, realizing that it was far from being the core mechanic, and more of a distraction leading to the grandiose boss battles. Navigating these areas is simplistic and does very little in the way of offering any kind of challenging gamplay, but that’s due to Jotun’s focus on the boss battles against the beings that the game is named for. Like a swift mix of elements from Transistor, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, and a variety of other game mechanics, visuals, and styles, Jotun quickly manages to evoke feelings of an indie darling with its old cartoon styled visuals, boss centered gameplay, and overall artistic rendering.Įach level consists of some simple mechanics to reach the rune at the end, as well as health upgrades, additional abilities, and some visual treats along the way. Sure, it’s not the most original sounding idea in gaming, but what game is anymore? What’s important is what gets done with that idea, and how the developer makes it their own. Jotun’s premise is a basic one: Using a variety of god given abilities, Thora embarks on a quest to talk down a pantheon of Jotun - Norse gods - to reclaim her honor after death. ![]() ![]() Even when you’re zoomed in to planetary scale your ships will just show up as a huge morass of icons because ship icons never go away. And icons, alas, do not tend to have a whole lot of character or personality about them. This reduces all the planets and asteroid fields, all of the nicely modelled frigates and cruisers and starbases, to just a big mush of icons. You see, the downside to including a strategic zoom in your game, as useful and necessary as it might otherwise be, is that players will often spend the majority of their time zoomed all the way out so that they can see what’s going on over the whole of the map at a glance. However, it might also be Rebellion’s Achilles heel. I should mention here that Rebellion’s zoom feature is just insanely good for something that basically uses one button it intelligently identifies the things you want to zoom in on and centres the screen on them - and will even track them as they move if you give it no further input – and it never does anything you don’t want it to. By using the mousewheel you can zoom all the way from a closeup of a single fighter squadron all the way up to a view of the entire star system. It’s your job to capture these hunks of rock for your empire, but since there can be literally hundreds of planets on the larger maps in Rebellion keeping track of everything would be a major pain if it hadn’t adopted one of Supreme Commander’s most lasting innovations: the strategic zoom feature. Planets, asteroids and other anomalies are scattered around each star, connected to each other by jump nodes. Rebellion is played out over a map of one or several star systems. Cold enough to not bother reviewing the thing for over a year, anyway. One of the strongest elements of the 4X is that you end up constructing a story around your empire’s rise to power it’s a critical part of the genre that’s almost completely missing from Rebellion, and it’s worth exploring the reasons for its absence since it explains why what is otherwise a very well put-together game can leave me so cold. It doesn’t have any of those memorable moments other 4Xes have: the time I launched a massive amphibious invasion of Persia to stop them from building the spaceship in Civ V the time I spat in the face of the council’s declaration of a single galactic leader and fought a doomed war against impossible odds in Master of Orion the time I played the undead in Age of Wonders and turned the entire world into an ash-blackened wasteland populated by skeletal monstrosities. I couldn’t tell you anything about those seventeen hours, however, because it turns out Rebellion is spectacularly bad at leaving any lasting impression on the people who play it. The seventeen hours Steam says I played indicates I invested a fair chunk of time into it. I bought Rebellion – pre-ordered it, actually – over a year ago. It should be right up my alley.Īnd yet, and yet. It even has vestigial trade, diplomacy and culture elements. It has a staggeringly comprehensive research tree, with no chance that a player will be able to complete all of it in a single game. It features battles with first dozens and then hundreds of ships all blasting the titanium out of each other with mass drivers and lasers, while swarms of fighters and bombers flit in and out of the fray. ![]() It’s a real-time space-based 4X game where you gradually spread the tendrils of your empire out from your home planet into the galaxy at large. ![]() ![]() The thoracic and lumbosacral spine are the usual sites of disease. There is an “Attempt to Recover” option, but it didn’t succeed in multiple attempts during our test and this became very frustrating. The company was well aware of this and assured us that the “nasty bug” was fixed shortly afterwards. We are excited to announce the release of AdGuard v2.10 for Mac. When waking the test laptop from sleep, AdGuard VPN was unable to recover and required us to close down the program and relaunch it. We also found a problem with the Windows app. Now that fast broadband connections are becoming widespread, AdGuard needs to optimise its protocol or improve its infrastructure because, right now, it can’t compete with the best VPNs. (We couldn’t test on the Tokyo/LA servers as these aren’t available to free users.)Īssuming that AdGuard doesn’t deliberately throttle its paid customers, we can only conclude that its performance isn’t that great. As we mentioned, AdGuard VPN deliberately throttles the connection to its free customers and these results were more or less as expected: The good news is that AdGuard does allow Bittorrent traffic, so if you’re trying to download, shall we say, “sensitive” files, you can do so anonymously.Īlthough you won’t feel a noticeable slow-down on many home broadband connections below 100Mbps, if you’re lucky to have Gigabit broadband, you will feel the difference. That’s not a huge loss for most people, however, and such features can often have a big impact on speed. This is where your connection is routed to one server and then another, so there’s even less of an audit trail and it prevents even the most determined from tracking you. Unfortunately, this haven’t been independently checked, so on this one, we have to take the company’s word for it that it really doesn’t log anything.ĪdGuard’s jurisdiction is Cyprus, meaning all data is protected under European GDPR rules, offering greater protection than companies basing themselves in, for example, the USA.ĪdGuard VPN doesn’t offer the option to run a “double VPN”, which services such as NordVPN do. ![]() That means that if the company was asked to provide information about who uses their service and when, they couldn’t, adding to the level of security and anonymity offered. The company says it will update this wording to address our criticism here.įrom a privacy point of view, AdGuard VPN has a no-logs policy. This limits the protection to your web browsing, but as with so many ‘VPN’ extensions, AdGuard still talks about the benefits of its VPN service and doesn’t make it clear enough (in our opinion) that the extensions are just a proxy service which doesn’t encrypt your connection like a VPN. Alternatively there’s a browser extension available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera. ![]() In general, we’d always advise paying for a VPN, but you might like to give the free version a try before deciding whether to subscribe.įrom here, therefore, we’re looking solely at the paid product.ĪdGuard VPN is available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android as a standalone app, offering whole-system protection. That’s sufficient for most things, but if you are paying for a much higher speed from your provider, it will irk to use a product that slows your internet down.
